I have contributed to a chapter to this ECPR (European Consortium for Political Research) book dedicated to exploring the evolving role of deliberative mini-publics in constitutional processes across Europe.

From small-scale experiments, deliberative democracy has recently taken a constitutional turn in countries such as Iceland and Ireland, where mini-publics have been central to constitutional reforms. Estonia, Luxembourg, and Romania have also engaged in deliberative processes to shape their constitutional frameworks. In Belgium, the G1000 — a citizen-led initiative — sparked a broader societal debate about the role of citizens in democracy. Simultaneously, European institutions have introduced deliberative democracy practices to bridge the gap between citizens and policymakers.

This book critically examines these developments, bringing together academics who design these innovative forms of constitutional deliberative democracy and theorists who evaluate their democratic standards. It provides an essential overview of the challenges and opportunities presented by this "constitutional turn" in deliberative democracy, offering valuable insights for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers alike.
