Over the last decade, I have had the chance of speaking at hundreds of events, ranging from presentations and conferences to seminars, both as a co-coordinator of the G1000 initiative and later as a democratic innovation advisors.

During the recent period from 2019 to 2024, I have had the opportunity to reach thousands of individuals at local, national, and international levels, sharing ideas I am deeply passionate about across more than 200 events.

Dynamic exchange

On a personal note, speaking to audiences is one of the most rewarding aspects of my work. It’s not just about sharing knowledge; it’s about engaging in a dynamic exchange of ideas that leaves me with new insights, new inspirations, and a renewed sense of purpose. It’s in these interactions that I find the most profound sense of fulfillment. The energy, the curiosity, and the hope that people bring to these spaces are truly invigorating. Many participants, whether in intimate settings or large-scale forums, leave with a renewed sense of belief that change is possible—that a democratic system can evolve to be more inclusive, more participatory, and more effective.

One of the most recurring themes in these conversations is the growing optimism about the possibility of real democratic transformation. A major focus of my work has been to demonstrate that a system which continually involves citizens in decision-making is not just a dream, but a tangible reality that can be built in countries beyond Belgium. It’s inspiring to witness firsthand how this vision sparks hope among participants, giving them the confidence to believe that another model is not only possible but already taking shape.

Memorable highlights

Some of the most memorable highlights of this journey include my "Democratic Innovation Tour" in the United States, where I had the honor of presenting at some of the world’s most prestigious universities—Yale (article about my presentation), Harvard, and Columbia. Each of these experiences allowed me to engage with bright, passionate students and faculty members eager to explore how democratic processes can be modernized to better reflect the voices of the people.

Another unforgettable chapter was my involvement with the Kosovo Parliament and the Scottish Parliament, where I had the opportunity to contribute to the launch of their respective citizen assemblies by explaining the deliberative wave. These engagements were powerful reminders of the global potential for change, showing that the principles of participatory democracy can transcend borders and be applied in diverse contexts.
